Mary's Cabbage Rolls

This recipe is my own version of Cabbage Rolls. There are so many different ways to make them by Googling them you can see for yourself.

I first start out with a head of cabbage of medium size, place in pan of water to boil. Once you have it boiling, let it boil about 15-20 mins this should get all the way thru to the heart of the cabbage. Once done set aside in a strainer/colander to drain excess water off. Better to drain heart side down!

While you are boiling the cabbage, start frying up your meat combo(1 lb ground sausage & 1lb of ground burger) add 1 med onion, chopped and add seasoning such as garlic powder & Montreal Steak Seasoning.
Cook until done thoroughly. ***Reality is you will probably have cabbage done before the meat is finished.

While all your meat and cabbage are cooking put on some rice (1 c white rice to 2 c water) bring to boil then turn down to simmer until water is gone about 20 mins.

Ok then you mix the rice and meat together in large bowl...Now the fun begins take a leaf one at a time off of your cabbage carefully...
then cut out the heart or the ribbing (like you see in the picture)

add one big spoonful(ladle) of cooked mix to the leaf

fold the bottom sides in first then roll to the big(leafy) end

Repeat until you have a full pan

Take the can of tomato sauce and add about cup of water & a healthy tablespoon of Montreal Chicken seasoning, mix well and pour over the rolls until about half way up the rolls ...don't drown them but make sure they have liquid. Remember everything is cooked already so no real need for to much liquid. You may have some leftover will explain in a jiffy what you can do with that and leftover meat mix and cabbage.
Bake in 350* oven for about 25 mins

Now for leftover goodies from making these beauties...chop up the small head you have left and add back to the pan they were cooked in, along with meat mix and dump the tomato sauce in as well. Cook up while the cabbage rolls are in the oven. Serve on the side or on top of the rolls with your supper. Really is a filling meal in itself.
